New procedure changes to improve Monorail safety
Two weeks after a crash of two monorails which killed the pilot of one of the monorails involved, the company has a number of new safety procedures in place to ensure the safety of monorails. Some of these procedures include:
- Addition of more employees at the monorail stations to oversee operations of the monorail system
- Monorail control center now staffed by a monorail cast member at all times
- Addition of more employees to help with monorail operations at busier stations (like the Magic Kingdom and TTC)
- Speed of the monorails approaching stations have reduced and in some cases, monorails first stop completely before entering the station
- Passengers no longer allowed to ride in the front cabins along with the pilot
- When switching tracks or driving in reverse on a track, monorail drivers must exit and drive from the rear cabin (a practice that has been re-instated after being eliminated a number of years ago)
The process of switching tracks now takes several more minutes to complete with the new procedures in place. Some of these procedures were in place many years ago and removed to reduce guest wait times. The company says the new procedures are designed to ensure the security for cast members and guests.
As a monorail cast member, I feel I need to correct this. I’m not sure where you found this information, but not all of it is true.
“Speed of the monorails approaching stations have reduced and in some cases, monorails first stop completely before entering the station”
We have not changed our speed entering the stations. The only time we slow down or stop before entering stations is when we have a maintenance check occurring.
