This Week in Disney History (November 16-22)



1905: Actress Eleanor Audley (Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty, Lady Tremaine in Cinderella, original Madame Leota in Disneyland) is born in New York City.
1906: Writer, Disney Legend, and Imagineer, William Cottrell (Pinocchio, The Reluctant Dragon, Alice in Wonderland) is born in South Ben, Indiana. He was the first President of WED Enterprises as well as the brother-in-law of Lillian and Walt Disney.
1907: Animator, Disney Legend, and one of Walt’s “Nine Old Men”, Les Clark (Steamboat Willie, Sleeping Beauty, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan) is born in Ogden, Utah. 
1911: Animator Andy Engman (Snow White, Make Mine Music, The Jungle Book) is born in Vasa, Finland.
1919: Actor Alan Young (Mickey’s Twice Upon A Christmas, The House of Mouse, The Cat From Outer Space) is born in England.
1924: Actress Geraldine Page (Madame Medusa in The Rescuers, Mrs. Duke in The Happiest Millionaire) is born in Kirksville, Missouri.
1928: Walt Disney’s first Mickey Mouse cartoon with sound, Steamboat Willie, premieres. Many see this as the first time Mickey was shown in a film and recognize it as his birthday (he’s 80 this year).
1944: Animator Gary Goldman (Peter Pan and many others) is born in Oakland, California.
1944: Actor Danny DeVito (voice of Phil in Hercules) is born in Neptune, New Jersey.
1948: Actor Samuel E. Wright (Sebastian in The Little Mermaid) is born in Camden, South Carolina.
1951: Actor Stephen Root (Bubbles in Finding Nemo, Zeb in The Country Bears) is born in  Sarasota, Florida.
1960: Actress Allison Janney  (Peach in Finding Nemo) is born in Dayton, Ohio.
1960: Actress Elizabeth Perkins (Coral in Finding Nemo) is born in Queens, New York.
1961: Sculptor, animator, designer, Imagineer, Rubén Procopio (The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, Rescuers Down Under, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) is born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 
1962: In Disneyland’s Adventureland, the Swiss Family Treehouse opens.
1962: Actress Jodie Foster (Freaky Friday, Napolean and Samantha) is born in Los Angeles, California.
1963: Disney’s The Incredible Journey premieres.
1963: Actress Ming-Na (Mulan in Mulan and Mulan II) is born in  Coloane Island, Macau, China.
1968: Actor Owen Wilson (Lightning McQueen in Cars) is born in Dallas, Texas.
1971: The Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground opens at the Walt Disney World Resort.
1978: Mickey Mouse becomes the first cartoon character to get his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
1988: Disney’s 27th animated feature, Oliver & Company, premieres. It’s the first film since 101 Dalmations that Xerographic overlays are used to give the backgrounds an edgier look.
1989: Actor Cody Linley (Jake Ryan in Hannah Montana, That’s So Raven, Dancing With The Stars) is born in Texas. 
1989: An Epcot Resort, The Swan Hotel-operated by Westin Hotels but located in WDW property-opens.
1989: Disney’s 28th animated feature, The Little Mermaid, is released.
1990: Disney’s 29th animated feature, and the first Disney animated sequel as well as the first to be animated by Computer rather than cels and paints, The Rescuers Down Under, premieres along with the featurette The Prince and the Pauper
1991: Disney’s 30th animated film, Beauty and the Beast, premieres.
1993: The Partner’s Statue in Disneyland is dedicated.
1994: In Walt Disney World’s Tomorrowland, The Timekeeper debuts, replacing America the Beautiful.
1995: Disney/PIXAR‘s 1st joint feature, Toy Story, is released. 
1997: People calling 407-824-4321 find out that Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride is definitely closing.
1997: At Port Canaveral, the Disney Cruise Line Terminal, Cruise Terminal 8, is dedicated. 
1999: The FastPass system is first used at Disneyland’s it’s a small world.
2002: Disney’s 42nd animated feature, Treasure Planet, premieres.
2004: In Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland, Stitch’s Great Escape! officially opens.
2004: In Epcot’s Living with the Seas Pavilion, Turtle Talk with Crush officially debuts. 
2006: At the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City, Disney’s latest musical, Mary Poppins, premieres.
2006: An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737, painted with Genie from Aladdin, makes its first flight from Seattle to Orange County, California (the plane is a result of the partnership between the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Alaska Airlines, and the Disneyland Resort). 
2008: Disney’s 47th animated feature, Bolt, premieres.
