Parents Plan To Boycott Disney Over Closing Of Virtual Magic Kingdom

(News | Source: Central Florida News 13)

Parents are planning to boycott Disney due to its planned closure of Virtual Magic Kingdom. Parents are complaining about the shut down because the game helped teach their kids computer and networking skills.

“We were quite surprised. That wasn’t the way they promoted it from the beginning. There were so many things to buy. They were promoting it instead of VMK being used to promote other things,” said mother Shelly Amato.

Please. How about putting that energy to something more constructive?

Obviously, they must be losing money on this site or something. It’s a business, not a charity.

The “business” I believe is doing quite well. The “business” was providing an opportunity for many disabled children(and adults) a place to PLAY and do things they never could do in real life. VMK showed these children that they are normal, that they had an imagination, that they could learn, interact and socialize. There is no other game/website like it and there never will be. When a game can improve the quality of life for even just one individual it’s worth fighting for. It’s not wasted energy. The magic of disney lived in VMK.

Go outside and play. It’s almost summer vacation anyhow.

I disagree, mir4mad - there are other outlets for this same thing, and Disney owns two of them - Club Penguin and Pirates Online. And what could be more magical, interactive, and something you could never do in real life than to be a Pirate?

For those of you who said that Disney didn’t make any money off of vmk, you couldn’t be more wrong. Many people went to Disney world solely for the codes that could be won there. Also, many people bought disney DVD’s for the codes located inside. VMK was also instrumental in promoting Disney movies, such as Pirates of the Carribean. I think that VMK, as well as being good for business was also good for those playing it. It offers a more fun alternative to other online games, such as Club Penguin, which Disney owns but is keeping open, as well as gives people a place where they are accepted and can socialize with people around the world in a safe environment. When Disney started, it wasn’t supposed to be about the money. Sure, you gotta pay the bills, but it was supposed to be about the magic, and I think that modern Disney has forgotten that. Disney is making a mistake by closing this virtual paradise and I hope and expect that they will monetarily suffer.
