The latest in photographer Annie Leibovitz’s “Disney Dream Portrait Series” takes place in the undersea world of “The Little Mermaid.” To play the part of Ariel, she dressed actress Julianne Moore in a mermaid costume. American swimming icon Michael Phelps was also dressed in a merman tail with scales.

When asked about the shoot, Leibovitz described it as follows: “Yes, Julianne has a big mermaid tail; it’s interesting. Michael, too. His movements were so graceful and beautiful you just felt like you were watching a real merman.” “[It was] one of the most complicated shots I have ever done,” she said of the Michael Phelps shoot.

Leibovitz photographed Phelps in a backlot tank in Los Angeles while Moore was photographed on a New York soundstage.

Thanks for the post Daniel. I think Julianne Moore is awesome. Any idea who the backup mermen/merpeople are?

The one in the foreground is Phelps. Other than that, the others weren’t credited in any of the sources.

Michael Phelps, Cullen Jones, Brendan Hansen, Rowdy Gaines, and Janet Evans are the Mermen and Mermaids in the background. According to the Disney site. http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/disneyparks/en_US/index?name=Gallery
