On April 15, 1983, the first Disney theme park outside of the continental United States opened. It was designed by Walt Disney Imagineers to look like its sister park in Florida and the mother park in California and named Tokyo Disneyland. It is made up of the World Bazaar, Adventureland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Westernland, Critter Country, and Mickey’s Toontown. However, this park is not owned by Disney. The Oriental Land Company licenses the Disney name and theme from the Walt Disney Company. In 2001, a second park was built turning the park into the Tokyo Disneyland Resort. This second park is Tokyo DisneySea.
Now, 25 years later, Tokyo Disneyland is celebrating its silver anniversary with attendance levels that rival its stateside counterparts.
