Walt Disney World is now offering politicians and other VIPs special ‘FastPasses’ that allow them to skip in line for popular rides like Soarin’ and Expedition Everest. This was done to allow the VIP guests to not have to worry about the logistics for security problems they might have while waiting in long lines. A memo stated that no more than 25 are ever in circulation on any day. According to Disney, passes are offered on a very limited basis and is determined on a case-by-case basis by Disney’s government-affairs office; the same office that runs Disney’s lobbying efforts.
Government ethic watchdog groups have expressed concern that the passes might provide Disney a way to offer free lobbying services for politicians. Disney has not looked into any ethics rulings on the issue but has sought after the legal opinion from experts in the field.
