The Walt Disney Company is planning on building an 800 room resort on the island of Oahu. Disney announced the plan on Wednesday with Hawaii’s Governor Linda Lingle. The company has purchased 21 acres of oceanfront land on the southwestern corner of Oahu about 25 miles from Honolulu.

“Hawaii is just an ideal location for us as we continue to venture outside of the theme-park berm, if you will,” DVC President Jim Lewis said.

Imagineering is working on the final designs but construction is intended to begin next year with a goal of opening by 2011. Disney has also indicated that the use of Disney characters will be limited to those that fit with the authenticity of the area, such as Lilo and Stitch. Disney has also indicated they are looking at Lake Tahoe and the Caribbean as additional locations for future resorts.
