Disney Cruise Line in renegotiations with Port Canaveral

(News | Source: Orlando Sentinel)

Disney Cruise Line is renegotiating their contract with the Port Canaveral Authority which is set to expire next summer. Executives for the cruise line are considering moving some of the company’s operations away from the port. Disney Cruise Line’s senior vice president of operations Tom Wolber indicated that Miami and Fort Lauderdale are alternatives they are considering. Experts say that there is almost no chance Disney would move out of Port Canaveral completely since it is only 60 miles away from Walt Disney World. The spokeswoman for Disney Cruise Line, Rena Langley, said that Port Canaveral will remain an important port for the cruise line. “We think it’s one of the best terminals in the world,” she said, though she added, “We’re always in discussions with Port Canaveral on how to raise the bar.”

Disney has exclusive access to the terminal it uses that was built at a cost of over $26 million as long as it makes 150 stops to the port a year. Disney’s new ships will be two decks taller and 45 percent larger than their current ships which would need multi-million dollar upgrades to the terminal.
